OpenOffice

Here at Ephrata Public Library we offer free use of our public computers, if you have a library card. On our computers you have access to the Microsoft Office programs. (Word, Excel, etc..) For people who use their own personal computers, I am often asked if there are other programs like Word that aren’t as expensive.

In this post I want to talk about the program “OpenOffice.” OpenOffice is an open source program that you can download on the web.

What is an open source program?

An open source program put into simple terms is a FREE program for anyone to use.

OpenOffice is a word processing program that actually looks and feels a lot like Word. It might not have ALL the bells and whistles that the Microsoft Office program offers, but it creates nice documents. One of the best parts about OpenOffice is that it’s compatible with files created in Word. What that means is, documents created in Word can be opened and edited by OpenOffice.

Not only do you get the word processing program, but when you download OpenOffice you will also be able to create spreadsheets, and presentations.
